The Environmental Protection Agency recommends that you not wash your vehicle in your driveway and states, “Alternatively, go to a commercial carwash that uses water efficiently and disposes of runoff properly.”
That’s because the Clean Water Act requires our car wash to send wastewater to treatment plants where it’s treated before being released into the environment. When washing at home, however, wastewater can reach sensitive wetlands, water supplies and stormwater drains.
A recent engineering study showed, in fact, that in a city the size of Worcester, the following pollutants are deposited into stormwater drains annually by home car washing:
 380 gallons of gasoline, diesel and motor oil
800 pounds of phosphorus and nitrogen
120 pounds of ammonia
4,400 pounds of surfactants
60,000 pounds of solid wastes |

Studies show that the average garden hose used to wash a car at home uses 10 gallons of water per minute. Compared to the 2.3 gallons per minute used by our high-pressure self-serve sprayers, this difference can really add up. Compare how much water is saved using Ernie’s:
